Why are we here?

I love hearing this. The ultimate question seeking purpose. validation, reason, & being.

Not a knock on anyone, that’s for sure. I don’t even have the answer. I won’t even pretend to have the answer. And before I begin to sound like even more of a pompous douche than I already do, I’m going to try and portray my thoughts on the matter as logical as I can muster.

I’m more curious to discuss the why. Where did this thought even come from? Is it primal? Or is it the result of a mind able to break from basic primal instincts? Think about it. Animal instinct can be summed up in 2 words, Survival and Procreation.

Survival is not the same instinct as those of the hunters and gatherers of millennia past, it’s different now. Survival in today’s day and age is rather simple. We don’t have to wake up with the rising sun to go search for berries and edible foliage; we don’t have to go hunting prey for our next meal. We go to the nearest grocery store and pickup what we need, sometimes what we want, but mostly what we can afford. Our days are not spent in survival mode searching for our next meal. Majority of the population also has a shelter over our heads to protect us from the weather, wild animals, and gives us a place to rest. Seems like survival is pretty limited these days to just waking up in the morning and getting shit done.

Procreation, making babies, having sex, fucking. We have access to that on the daily. We just call it being horny. And if we don’t have a mate available, we have plenty of other methods to get the job done to satisfy these primal urges. Between sex toys, casual sex, porn, basic masturbation, etc. We got that covered. Or at least I think we do.

So if two of our biggest primal instincts are satisfied, what does that leave us? Evolution? The ability of the mind to wander, to wonder, and to think? Thus creating the concept of self.

Self, “a person’s essential being that distinguishes them from others.” (The Oxford Dictionary)

There it is. I think the definition hits the nail on the head, don’t you?

The question comes up as a person’s search for self. We feel we must be distinguished. We must have a purpose. So we reach out into the Ether to try and find a meaning behind it.

There’s nothing wrong with this either. In a way its a sense of pride. And at the end of the day, a little pride is a good thing. And I’m not talking about the ridiculousness of narcissism. I’m talking about just the right amount of pride that gives us self worth. There is is again… Self.

As humans, we have evolved to this place of being self aware. This has also caused us to start searching for ourselves. To find a meaning. To find something that distinguishes us, sets us apart from other humans.

The search for individuality is nothing to be ashamed of. It seems to be a motivation for many philosophical thinkers. But I’m tired of the question. It can be endlessly debated between multiple religions, beliefs, and creeds. So I like to believe I came up with a better question. The Ultimate Question.

Why are you here? No. The fact is, you ARE here, so…

What are you going to do about it?
